| Debbie van Berkel Debbie obtained her “Leave No Trace” Master Educator teaching certificate from the National Outdoor Leadership School in the U.S. in 2001 and has conducted sessions for thousands of people at organizations like Mountain Equipment Co-op. She was also very active for many years in, and created and taught a Backpacking Course for, Girl Guides of Calgary. She has been a Girl Guide Leader, Camp Advisor, Camp Trainer, Support Counselor and currently runs her own business. Her other training and experience includes: Wilderness First Aid, Support Counseling and preparing groups to complete the West Coast Trail. She often guides groups on backpacking adventures for weeks at a time. Debbie first began her interest in environmental protection while growing up on Vancouver Island and experiencing first hand the devastating impact that people had on the environment. Debbie lives in Calgary, is married, has a teenage son and daughter and two dogs. When Debbie has some free time she usually will return to her roots on Vancouver Island to go backpacking, kayaking and sailing. | ![]() | Shelly Burrows Shelly has been involved with the St John Ambulance for many years, as an active member of the community service arm through the St John Ambulance Brigade, and also as a highly qualified instructor of first aid. One of her special qualifications is that of Wilderness First Aid instructor, which has become increasingly popular over the years as more people venture into the mountains for recreation. An accomplished public speaker, she has presented to many organizations and associations on every aspect of first aid over the past 10 years, and brings with her a wealth of experience, knowledge, and practical experience from working in the field. Because of her organizational skills, and vast knowledge of emergency response programs, she was chosen to represent St John Ambulance in coordinating a forthcoming major mock disaster scenario at Calgary Airport later this year. In the light of recent events like September 9/11, her expertise and experience have been invaluable as a working member of the committee responsible for creating this important event. No stranger to audiences, she encourages lively interaction, and always leaves her audiences feeling that they not only learned something valuable, but they were involved in the process. | ![]() |
| Jonathan Wynder Jonathan is a self proclaimed outdoor enthusiast with interests in hiking, backpacking, climbing, skiing, showshoeing, paddling etc. He is the recipient of the "Queen's venturer award" for excellence in Scouting and is a certified AB Search and Rescue member. He also has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Ecotourism and Outdoor leadership) from Medicine Hat College, is a Leave No Trace Master Educator and is certified in Wilderness and Remote First Aid. | ![]() |
| Mike Horembala Mike is currently a teacher at David Thomspon High School in west central Alberta and has been teaching a variety of outdoor education courses for 10 years. His goal is to educate students about the natural environment and to become stewards of it using outdoor pursuits as the vehicle. He serves as the Environment Chair for the Alberta Recreational Canoe Association (ARCA) and sits as a member of the Environment Committee of the Canadian Recreational Canoe Association (CRCA). | Todd Ward Todd has been a Leave No Trace Master Educator since October 2004. He has been an active volunteer in Southwestern Ontario as a Search and Rescue Brigade member and instructor with St. John Ambulance and is recognized nationally as a Wilderness and Marine first aid instructor with St. John. Since 1998, Todd has been active in the outdoor adventure industry in Canada as a recognized Canoe Ontario guide and more recently a kayak instructor with the Canadian Recreational Canoe Association. Todd is currently working toward finishing a diploma program at Fanshawe College in Recreation and Leisure Services with plans to attend Lakehead University’s School of Outdoor Recreation in Thunder Bay Ontario. | ![]() |
| Julie Walker Julie Walker (BPE) is a Naturalist and an outdoor recreation Guide with over 16 years experience in outdoor recreation and nature education. She has used her degree in Physical Education, majoring in Outdoor Pursuits, in her work with youth, adults and seniors, year round since 1985. Julie taught outdoor education programs for the Calgary Waldorf School, Junior Forest Wardens, the Calgary Zoo and the University of Calgary’s Outdoor Centre summer youth camps. She taught the “Earth keepers” program, (for grades 4-6) with Camp Horizon and with Educational Excursions at Fish Creek Provincial Park. Julie is current in her Wilderness First Aid, and level “C” CPR. |
